If he steals treasures from other places then the only thing you can really do is warn the neighbours to close their shed doors and not to leave shoes etc. outside.I had a dog that used to be a great thief at night, one time she came home with a bag or fertilizer! Make sure your dog has plenty of old shoes and toys to play with and growl if he touches yours. If you leave your own personal things laying around outside then it will be impossible to teach the dog....

nothing thats cute, but i would make sure your dog is kept secure in your yard.....and it comes down to you training your dog use authority in your voice....NO NO NO NO!!!!! but that is cute

I don't know, but my guess is he might find it comforting to have things around him that carry his owners scent and remind him of his owners. (shoes and underwear and other clothing is a prime example) This might suggest the dog is lonely or insecure for example, in which case that is the underlying issue you should be looking at. It would be a good question to ask Dr Harry Cooper! :)

If the dog is brazenly stealing the items in your presence, you need to catch the dog in the act, which may not be easy. When you catch the dog in the act of stealing something, give him a firm "NO!!" , maintain firm eye contact and stand firm. As soon as the dog relinquishes the item, praise them. It may take quite a few attempts before the dog gets the message, but the key is to be consistent.

If however the dog only takes things when you are not around and you can never catch them in the act, your most practical solution may be simple prevention and limiting the dog's accessibility to items which are off-limits. eg. locking tools and garden items up in the shed, putting toys in a box, keep bedroom door closed, etc.
