chevy blazer making noise on right front, near tire?
Asked by: romia from -
My 2000 chevy blazer, started making this noise on the right front side , sorta sounds like there is something scraping the right front tire..but when i looked, I didnt see a thing. it makes the noise when the car's in motion...and dosent do it in reverse! it is not continuous either. It will stop when you slowwdaow & stops when the car is idleing! it was making the noise last week, and then stopped for a while, now its back....I took it into get it looked at and the mechanics told me i needed a new new crank shaft..so I got that & the noise is back.
Additional Details added (09/14/08):
Just some Additional Information on my Chevy Blazer....

~I appoligize in advance for my limited auto mechanic knowledge base!!~

I gave wrong infor on a prior email,,,They actually replaced the Idler Arm & the Pittman arm. not the crank shaft!

The repair place said it needed this & that was where the noise was coming from. However, aprox. 1 week later the noise came back,,really loud again on the same side right front tire area.
I took it back to another mechanic same franchise....this older mechanic who seemed sane & honest,,,he said it was the 4WD and 2WD. something about it wasnt engaging. thus, the loud scrapping noise!! He took it out & lubed it, said, if the noise came back he would have to repalce something! a week later the noise is back again. note: if I drive in 4WD it dosent make the noise.... he didnt charge me for this visit! geeeeee, wonder why????
my guess is.... cuzz he didnt do a thing! If it is the 4WD which i think it is becuzz Right after I used the 4WD to get up this steep gravel road, that is when the noise started so that makes sense!

my question is, what are the options for this kind of problem if it is the 2WD/4WD?? CAN it be disengaged if it is really expensive to fix?

thanks to all who have tolerated my lack of auto mechanic savy!!! :) ~

A new crankshaft!!!!! Sounds to me like you were shafted! Why would you need a crankshaft(engine part, which costs alot of labour to fit) for a problem that seems to stem from your front wheel? There are numerous reasons for a noisy tyre:

1. The tyre is worn and needs to be replaced. 2. The tyre is not pumped to the correct air pressure. 3. The brake pads are worn. Brakes pads are some...

I agree that you got shafted by buying a crank!!!! This is a case for the Better Busness Bureau to look into. I sounds to me like the retaining clips on the back of your brake pad have broken off. As you apply the brake the pad comes into contact with the rotor and and then will not retract as you release the brakes. The pad is lying up against the rotor as you are driving giving the scraping sound. This scraping sound comes from the early warning guide build onto the pad itself. Simple fix and at a fraction of the cost...
