The tutor in question should tell his incarcerated pupil that there is a big difference between breaking criminal laws and violating traffic codes. People don't get prison sentences for going 10 mph over the speed limit. That kind of ignorant rationalization is probably what landed him behind bars in the first place.

He is completely correct and far too clever to be in prison. such are the contradictions of life!
Incidentally I have 9 points on my licence and am consequently a plaything of the Derbyshire Constabulary!

For example lets just say that speeding is a crime punishable by law, but not incarceration. Does that make a jewelry thief that much worse? It's a fine line between speeding and reckless driving.

I have always found it easy to ignore my wrongs by pointing out the flaws of others. Maybe it's a case of taking a law breaker (tutor) to know another, or to relate? Sometime we have to hear the message and not focus on the messenger, otherwise we miss a lot of valuable lessons in life. A lot like me telling my son to buckle up for several years and not until about a month ago did I finally start wearing my seat belt. My message was good, but it comes of hypocritical.

The question itself is kind of childish. "How can you preach to me about laws, I bet you break the speed limit all the time". His thinking places him on path to conclude everybody breaks the law sometimes, why don't we just get rid of them all.

The lesson is for the tutor as well, if he in fact is guilty of speeding he should do a little self examination too. Because one hasn't been caught in the act does not make him innocent of a crime.

A Madison County sheriff's deputy has been put on administrative leave after he allegedly led five agencies on a high-speed chase early Saturday.

Deputy Scott Bishop, 39, allegedly fled in his truck from two game wardens after they caught him spotlighting deer at about 1:30 a.m. in the area of Wall Road in the eastern part of the county.

The 11-year veteran of the sheriff's office was arrested after a brief chase that ended on Hillside Drive when his truck ran over spike strips.

Two children were in the truck with him during the chase, Lt. Ron Derting of the Madison County Sheriff's Office said today.

Officers handcuffed Bishop in his driveway. He was booked in the Madison County metro jail on 11 misdemeanor counts and was released during the weekend on a $3,300 bond. Derting said the sheriff's office will not release a photo of Bishop for a few days because it could harm some of the department's unrelated, but continuing, investigations.

Bishop will remain on administrative leave with pay pending the results of an internal investigation, he said.

"We're saddened by it," Derting said of the arrest. "No one is bigger than law enforcement as a whole. It's unfortunate."

State game wardens Joe Lindsey and Jason Dean turned on their blue lights and began pursuing Bishop after he allegedly shined a light at a deer before taking a shot at it.

He nearly ran over two of his fellow officers on Ryland Pike during the chase when the deputies positioned their patrol cars nose-to-nose to block the road.

Derting said the sheriff's office has not determined if Bishop had been drinking.

It's illegal to hunt, or even locate with a light, any type of wildlife at night with the exception of raccoons and opossums, said Capt. Johnny Johnson of the law enforcement section of the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division.

"These night hunters are not only taking undue advantage of the game," Johnson said today. "There's safety issues with people shooting out of vehicles in the dark."

Johnson said state game wardens charged Bishop with hunting deer at night, hunting from a public road, hunting without a written permit, hunting by aid of a motor vehicle, locating wildlife by the aid of artificial light and hunting with illegal ammunition.

Derting said Bishop's own department charged him with reckless endangerment.

No one was injured in the chase, and Bishop has since expressed his regrets to the department, Derting said.

"He's remorseful," Derting said. "Officers are human, and they make mistakes, too.
"If he indeed spotlighted and fired into the woods, then he probably knew what he was doing was wrong."

Officers confiscated Bishop's truck, lights and all the guns in the vehicle, including a shotgun loaded with buckshot, a type of ammunition that is illegal in Madison County, said Johnson.

Each charge could result in less than a year in jail if Bishop is convicted, said Derting.
Johnson said fines for some of the charges start at about $250.

The sheriff's office, game wardens and Huntsville, Owens Cross Roads and Gurley police assisted in the chase.

Johnson said sheriff's deputies frequently work with the wardens, providing tips and helping them catch those who violate fishing and hunting laws.

"I hate it was a fellow officer involved because we've always had good cooperation from the sheriff's office," he said.
