A supervisor should immediately audit the register to see if there is an overage. If there is an overage and it's close to or exactly what the customer claims to have been shorted, then the chances are that the cashier screwed up. If the drawer balances, then the cashier did everything properly, the customer is mistaken or the possibility exists that the cashier pocketed the money. Whatever the case, I suggest you implement sensible policies and procedures and enforce them vigorously....

Since the amount is trivial and not substanital , it is in the interest of the business to listen to customer complaint and pay the 31 cents. It will retain the customer and the business will earn goodwill
