Do we actually do right by enforcing democracy on countries that have not undergone their renaissance and may not actually wish for it? Do we do it for them? Do we do it to make us feel better about ourselves?

I think this question leads directly to a discussion of how we interact with other countries - the question of dimplomacy and whether or not we should try talking with other leaders. No, it is not right to force democracy on another country, in fact, it seems a bit of a contradiction to me...forced freedom is an oxymoron. We need to maintain open lines of communication with developing nations and support them in their growth and learning as a country; we should be leading by example and taking care of our own democracy ...

We do it selfishly! Because our definition of democracy has been lost in our own countries as our leaders have taken away our democratic rights as a nation, and have replaced it with an autocracy disguised as a democracy!

We do it, so we feel less guilty about our own freedoms. This country has to stop fighting everybody else's battles, and start concentrating on our own problems.

First of all, I believe in American Exceptionalism. The light shining on a hill.
A segment of the American population does not, including some or our leading politicians.
There is an active and a passive form of this. In its passive form, just as many aspects of England served as a model for America, America has served as a model for many countries by any honest reading of history. There are ...

First all, I like your title "Born Free". This is a joke in my opinion since it cost to be born.
Democracy is a learning process, as a means, not as an immediate result. The result of democracy is a long process that requires a lot of hard work, commitment and the respect of minorities, freedom of speech, freedom of press, rule of law, etc. It requires the responsibility of the individuals, pa...

It is not right for us to impose our views on other countries. Personally, I live in the U.S. and hate the hidden nationalism in our country. Everybody thinks they are right and so is their government because it is American. All humans should have the right to choose what way they want to live; under what form of government and what lifestyle. Whenever a country imposes democracy nowadays, it is for personal gain. Everybody knows we went into Iraq for oil. The superpowerful governments can care less about the citizens o...

Good question, I very strongly believe that the answer is in the hands of who run our government and what the lobbyist are pushing for. If the answer is expected by the American people then it would be against enforcing democracy in other countries, and it wont' be for us to feel better. It would be for what our government wants to do to get our minds out of the internal serious problems we are facing today, and in order to please the strong loppyist in Congress. We have no business forcing democracy on anyone if they d...

We did not have a "renaissance," but we did have a revolution. Who knows it that is necessary? What we can make happen is an election so the people can elect their own representative government. It can be like ours or parliamentary and even have a king and royal family if that is what they want, per many European countries. The point is universal suffrage, voting for representatives.
