A light rod around 6-7ft is preferred and a small spinning reel loaded with very light line. Something around the 4-6lb works best. Most of the mullet are small and so this is sufficient line however hooking onto a large mullet will give you a very good fight. If you do manage to catch a large mullet it may be well worth filleting it and eating it fresh.

The best rig for chasing the mullet is a double dropper loop rig with 2 small hooks attached; the two droppers should be around 10-15cm long. Then a float between 50cm-1m above the top hook. There is no need to use a heavier trace for the mullet as they have no teeth and a bite off is not likely. The idea here is to have the bait drift about mid water through the school of mullet.
The key to catching mullet on a hook is to go small. Using a very small hook will greatly increase the hook up rate. I like to use a size 10 or 12. Be prepared for many to jump off the hook though. Once hooked they fight very hard jumping and throwing hooks is to be expected.
I find the most effective bait for catching the mullet is bread. Using small pieces I flatten the bread and completely cover the hook.
When trying to locate the schools of mullet look for rock groynes which have a high current flowing past, or other areas of high current. The mullet schools sit facing the current with the bigger fishing being further out in the middle of the river.
Casting up current and letting the bait drift down through the school is best. When the float starts to bob strike up current and hopefully a hook up will occur.
When preparing mullet for bait I fillet them, depending on the target species and method I will be using, I cut them in different ways. If using them on a set of ganged hooks I cut the fillets into a rough fish like shape and place on the ganged hooks. If using a single hook I cut it into a small piece and thread it onto the hook.
Hopefully after reading this it will help you to get your hands on some fresh mullet. It is well worth the effort required to catch them.
