The Department of Labor is the sole federal agency that monitors child labor and enforces child labor laws. The most sweeping federal law that restricts the employment and abuse of child workers is the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Child labor provisions under FLSA are designed to protect the educational opportunities of youth and prohibit their employment in jobs that are detrimental to their health and safety. FLSA restricts the hours that youth under 16 years of age can work and lists hazardous occupations too dangerous for young workers to perform. Enforcement of the FLSA's child labor provisions is handled by the Wage and Hour Division of the Department’s Employment Standards Administration.

The rules vary depending upon the particular age of the minor and the particular job involved. As a general rule, the FLSA sets 14 years of age as the minimum age for employment, and limits the number of hours worked by minors under the age of 16.

Also, the FLSA generally prohibits the employment of a minor in work declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor (for example, work involving excavation, driving, and the operation of many types of power-driven equipment). The FLSA contains a number of requirements that apply only to particular types of jobs (for example, agricultural work or the operation of motor vehicles) and many exceptions to the general rules (for example, work by a minor for his or her parents). Each state also has its own laws relating to employment, including the employment of minors. If state law and the FLSA overlap, the law which is more protective of the minor will apply

Child labor laws have become so strict because your health and welfare is premium in our society today. It wasn't always like that, you know. Our modern society has decided that SCHOOL IS YOUR JOB. ..and even if you're not getting paid now, think of it as a banking account that's holding your credits ( your grades) until you are legally able to work.

If you work hard at it ( like it was money you were earning ) you'll have saved up ( in smart credits) enough intelligence to "Buy" a high paying career.

I'm going to let you know what happened to me, when I was 10 years old under the "old system".

I took a job Hawking Newspapers on the street before school started (6:00AM to 8:15AM) 6 days a week ( yes even Saturday mornings too). I had to ,my mother was a foreign born single mother with a limited income. the little I earned helped.

I was rained on, splashed on by passing cars, snowed on, frozen ( I lost feeling in my hands often) in the winter, picked on and made fun of by bullies, and cursed at by mean people, yet I made 1 cent per newspaper that I sold. I was lucky to sell 30 newspapers per day.

Luckily for me the job turned into a regular paper route of 80 stops per day ( after school) a year later when the local newspaper I'd worked for was bought out by a bigger newspaper company. I worked that job continuously until I was 16 years old.

At 14 years old ( like you) I wasn't happy with the $17 bucks a week the newspapers were earning me. I lived near the ocean so, I worked in a boat yard ( after I'd finished the paper route) scraping barnacles off boat bottoms and preparing them for paint. This job was seasonal so I worked hard and fast.
I got cut up a lot but hey, I earned enough money for stitches and medicine when needed.

I earned $10 dollars per boat bottom. I made as much as $50 per week. that was a lot of money for a kid my age. I did this job until I was 18 and filled in the spaces on weekends at a used car lot, washing and polishing cars at $5 bucks per car;

This too had repurcussions, there were no safety regulations like today and one Saturday ( about a month and a half before my 16th birthday ) while polishing a car, with the high speed polishing machine, a fleck of dirt shot up into my eye. I couldn't see. I went to the emergency room and was really scared that I would lose the sight in my left eye forever.

Again luck was with me, I didn't lose my sight but a specialist had to come and treat me; My mother couldn't totally foot the medical bill either, so she had to take a loan; and since my boss employed me "off the books" due to my age, he gave a few dollars to my mother ( sort of like hush money) but then said he had let me go.

At 16, with my eyesight restored I got a " legal" job in a factory, working in the truck loading docks from 7:00PM to 11:00PM Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays nights and 7:30AM to 12:30PM Saturdays. I had to pay back that loan that my mother took for the medical treatments; It took 2 years.

I kept that factory job and the boat scraping job because it paid for my college education. In my last year of college, 4 months before graduation I'd read in a newspaper that there was a civil service test for a law enforcement career. The war in vietnam was raging, and everyone was going...so what the hell, my choice seemed to be limited to what color uniform I was eventually going to wear.

I took the test, sort of as a joke, with a few of my college buddies ( some of whom later became my work collegues). To my shock I passed, and with a super high mark. Other different kinds of tests followed one after the other in quick succession. I passed them all easily.

I graduated from college the 3rd week in June, on the last day of that same month, I was standing amongst 46 other men with my right hand up, swearing an oath of allegiance to a career that would take me 30 fascinating years to complete.

I was 22 years old. ...only 8 years older than you are now; and when I think back, I think I might have loved to have been a kid like you with time on my hands. I never really had carefree "teen" years as I was always working.

My advice to you is make the best of your young life and work hard in school §

If it is, then you just have to keep pounding the pavement and asking people. I have been there several times and I know it is easier when the economy is great. That doesn't help when it is bad.

You could become an entrepreneur and open your own business like a lemonad...

Well i needed a job so i went to a coffe shop and ask if they were hiring and they gave me a job it was easy i just waited for customers and took orders, Since i had all this time i had time to get online so i searched for jobs online and i found a place that payed me fo...

I don't recommend it caused later i found a published story i had written but i never got credit for it!!! I do think you need to wait for a job at least one more year! Or you can get an online job!Try going here, they offer money through paypal by reviewing sites so easy i already have 27 dollars in just 30 minutes!! It's great try and see if you like it!
