Why are all the rooftops of buildings and houses in France painted red??

It is a long standing tradition. During the plague they painted their houses with ox blood. It rotted and stank so much that the rats stayed away. Nobody wanted to get sick and die. So they put up with the smell. The color way pretty and denoted health, so it stayed.
