I'm not a dental proffessional (Richard would be qualified to directly answer here ) but my concern (I experienced similar situation 7 years ago with my tooth) with a possible ongoing infections would be the possibility of a bone infection developing. Potentially very difficult to treat or the infection getting into the bloodstream which can have other problems. He needs immediate attention- and not just in terms of yanking a tooth out.
