Renasant Corp. posted $7.9 million in net income in the second quarter of 2008, a 12 percent increase from $7 million the year before.

The Tupelo, Miss.-based bank's boost in earnings was primarily attributed a substantial hike in net interest income, which jumped to $27.5 million in the quarter ended June 30, versus $21.5 million during the same period last year.

The company's non interest income slightly increased to $13.7 million, compared to $12.8 million a year ago.

However, the company's earnings per diluted share slid to 38 cents per share in the latest quarter, compared to 41 cents per share a year ago.

The slight dip was attributed to additional shares of its common stock issued in connection with its acquisition of Nashville, Tenn.-based Capital Bancorp. Inc. last year and a related equity offering during the same period.
