Producing a new product idea

I have an idea for a novelty item that involves the production of custom pinatas. Every pinata would be unique to the buyer. I am trying to find a production source that would be super cheap so I can market this idea profitably. I'm not sure if I need to find a pianata souce to produce a prototype and then sell the idea to a manufacturer - or - find a company to produce the products for me and then I could sell them on a website. Advice would be most welcome. I've had this idea for eight years now, and I'd really like to try and make it fly.

First, get a patent, so that no one else steals your idea! Then, contact companies that already manufacture pinatas, and pitch your idea. If they are interested in manufacturing your product, then you are on your way to making a business of your own. Make your own prototype, and have it available for presentations.
