I don't know what the minimum wage is in the U.S., but it's $8.20 in the province where I live - I think that's higher than the U.S. federal minimum wage by almost $3, but it's still too low! $10.00 an hour sounds fair to me! People need motivation to work! The way the welfare system is set up here, people make more sitting on their butts than they would working for minimum wage! No need for child care, transportation exp., etc.

At 7.15 per hour, assuming a 40 hour week and a 52-week year (I know, most of us get paid vacation but I'm using these figures for simple math), a person will make $14,872 yrly. Can you live on that? I can (barely), but a lot of it depends on the cost of living where you are. How much is rent, groceries, utilties, etc? Then you need to decide on what you want to drive (an expensive SUV or a cheap beater), how much you want to spend on 'luxuries' (entertainment, booze, eating out, etc), and so on. And of course, I'm only...

With gas at $4.25 and car insurance and rent skyrocketing Minimum Wage should be about $20.00 per hour. Of course none of us small business owners could afford that amount because of..... $4.25 gas and skyrocketing insurance... yadda yadda yadda - the circle continues.

Raising minimum wage is a guaranteed way to raise the price of everything else to compensate! It is a temporary fix that just takes you back to the same problem, but with a higher inflation rate. On the other hand some of the jobs that make minimum wage are just ridiculous! And the trick to making sure that people that live off the government get less money than minimum wage is simple. Set the welfare payments to less than what you could make on minimum wage. Someone on their butt should never make more than a hard work...

For that to happen you will have to remove warmongers like George bush from the seat and make sure peace loving president is put in his place so that US can fill in extra 21500$ in each household which has costed so far in the name of war on terrorism.

The minimum wage should be the same everywhere: $0. Labor is a commodity; governments make messes when they decree commodities' prices. Washington, which has its hands full delivering the mail and defending the shores, should let the market do well what Washington does poorly. But that is a good idea whose time will never come again.
