discarded needles/needles syringe combinations/any sharp objects or instruments capable of inflicting penetrating injury from now on in this document are called sharps.
Sharps” must be disposed of into puncture resistant containers, (yellow colour
recommended) specifically labeled for this purpose, and approved by the occupational health and safety unity of the institution.
Bags/Sharps containers should be removed when they are 75% full. The 240L bins should be removed when 15cm from the top.
Discarded materials such as syringe, needle etc must be
disposed carefully in case they might fall in the hands of scavengers to
be sold for reuse.
Sharps are the main occupational hazard in hospitals, however, once contained and handled correctly under license there is no significant risk to the waste industry or to the public.
Some recommend they be sterilized before disposal and some recommend they be ground up. This is important if you are going to use a municipal service.
In the United states there are services you can hire to dispose of them for you. I still made sure they were not reusable.
