Social Distinctions for Marketing
|
Discuss the following topic, using personal experience and anecdotes to support your argument.
Race and gender (genetically uncontrollable factors) are huge social status definitions many still fight daily to overcome. If you fit into one of the "minority" groups, share a few social exclusion stories. If you don't fit into one of these obvious distinctions, you would still have stories to share:
• How did you feel when you were arbitrarily segregated into a social group-for example, made to sit at the kids table at a family gathering, not invited to a social gathering a friend hosted, or for the first time not asked if you were old enough or "carded?" Feel free to share any similar personal social status conflicts you experienced within the consumer world-for example, a woman buying a car, a man buying feminine products, a child alone at the theater, or your first trip to San Francisco, New Orleans, or a foreign country.
• Which marketing practices exploit these social distinctions? Is this ethical? Why or why not?
