What is a proctogram?
A proctogram is an x-ray examination used to document rectal function. A paste with dye called Barium is given rectally.
How do I prepare for this examination?
The rectum should be empty prior to the examination.
Can I take my usual medication?
Yes
What will happen during the examination?
A radiologist, radiographer and x-ray attendant will be present in the x-ray room. You will be asked to lie on your side on the x-ray table. The radiologist will place a soft tube into your back passage and fill the rectum with a white paste called Barium. This is a dye that outlines the rectum. The tube will then be removed and you will be asked to sit in an upright position on a special chair (similar to a camode). You will be asked to rest, squeeze and strain certain muscles and then defaecate the rectal paste, the radiologist will watch this on a special x-ray television screen and record images.
Will it hurt?
It will be mildly to moderately uncomfortable and there may be some cramping. The procedure is more embarrassing than painful.
How long will the examination take?
The examination typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete.
How will I learn the results?
The results will be sent to your doctor who will discuss the results with you. However, feel free to ask the radiologist any questions."
