|
I have a 15yr old that will turning 16 in a few months. I have custody of her and her father has had nothing to do with her and no support in 15yrs. She talk to him from time to time. He draw a ssi check so he does not provide any support. She has gotten to be very hard to handle, and is very rebellious. We have moved to another state and has gotten worse. She wants to live with him and I have decided to let her due to her behavior. My question is am I liable for her if she gets in any trouble since she is with her father.

Be safe, have a temporary custody agreement made up. Something that states she is in his custody at his location for a certain period of time relinquishing you from direct responsibilities during that time frame. Have it notarized or its worthless. It must be signed with all 3 parties present, so find a notary republic where he is and be there to sign it with him.

The answer depends a little on the location of the father. There is a bit of a move to make the parents more responsible for their children and you are the one with custody. Still in most places you will not be held responsible for letting the child live with any relative assuming you consider them a prudent person.

If you give her father sole custody, you are not responsible for any trouble she gets into! He is!
