We see lightening before thunder since light travels at much faster spped than the sound of the thunder.

A flash of lightning, followed after some seconds by a rumble of thunder, is for many people the first illustration of the fact that sound (like light) does not travel instantaneously, and that sound is by far the slower. Using this difference, one can estimate how far away the bolt of lightning is...

Because light travels faster than sound, you see the lightning first!

Dear Questionaire,

You will see both thunder and lighting at the same time. since we humans are split the seconds differences between the thunder and lighting.(capacity to travel to earth differences)

Light travels so fast it is vertually instant that you see the lightning.
Sound travels at approximatly 300meters per second, so it takes 3 seconds for the thunder clap to travel 1kilometer, or 4.5 seconds for it to travel 1 mile.
So count the number of seconds between when you see the lightning and hear the thunder. Take the number of seconds and divide by 5 and that will tell you how far away the storm is in miles....

as it is raining heavily here with thunder and lightening (bangkok, thailand), i will take a few minutes to walk out onto my yard and risk myself for your question... (a few minutes)... i have returned after witnessing this phenomenon and i can safely and 100 percent correctly say that according to my visual and auditory senses, i first saw lightning followed by thunder. there is also a calculation as to calculate the exact distance of lightening from your position....

lightning travels at the speed of light, thunder travels at the speed of sound, so the gap between the lightning (first) and the thunder tells you how far away the storm is. Once in the mountains I had both at once, not good :-)
