Im not sure of what louisiana cities are, but i always like the idea of living outside of a city maybe 20 minutes. find a place 20 minutes outside of the city (where there are plenty of things to do with children) with land. PA is really nice. we get all 4 seasons which is amazing. honestly, id say a town outside of philly, pa....u will have plenty to do, great weather seasons and really great people

As a business owner, I am being crushed by the B&O Tax, one of the most regressive tax systems in our country. We pay on Gross Receipts, whether we are profitable or not.

The following is right off the State of Washington Web Site:
The state B&O tax is a gross receipts tax. It is measured on the value of products, gross proceeds of sale, or gross income of the business.

Washington, unlike many other states, does not have an income tax. Washington’s B&O tax is calculated on the gross income from activities. This means there are no deductions from the B&O tax for labor, materials, taxes, or other costs of doing business.

They make it sound good that we don’t have a State Income Tax; however, the current Governor is working on getting that one through without changing the B&O tax. The reality is that the B&O Tax is a GRT - Gross Receipt Tax that has many hidden aspects. It is not a fair tax and we have had it since 1933.

This is a tax for a state government that does not know how to be fiscally responsible. The B&O in Washington States exempts small business from the B&O Tax if gross receipt sales do not exceed 28K per year. Now that is generous!

The other thing this author didn’t do, is take a drive on the wonderful 405!

BELLEVUE, WASH. (FORTUNE Small Business) -- Earl Overstreet, Chief Executive Officer of General Microsystems (GMI) in Bellevue, travels fewer than five times a year for business. But he visits the Mercer Slough Nature Park, across the street from his office, every day on his lunch break. He walks across a wooden bridge, gazes at Bellevue's rising downtown - and then turns away.

Over the past ten years Overstreet has watched the city evolve from a bedroom community into an urban center of skyscrapers and 117,000 inhabitants (the latest population figures, according to the local chamber of commerce), but he's more eager to point out blackberry bushes and red-tailed hawks.

"When you're surrounded by mountains and nature," he says, "you can't help but be content."

Overstreet, 60, and his wife, Barb, the firm's CFO, spend free time hiking, kayaking, and biking around the area. While new businesses are cropping up quickly, most office buildings are still enveloped by greenery - the city boasts 90 parks and 50 miles of trail.

"Taxes [including a 0.1496% business tax on gross receipts] and property costs are high," says Overstreet, "but it's a premium for the living conditions."

The median home sale price hovers at $500,000 (the metro area averages about $400,000), but Bellevue, lying 20 minutes from Seattle, also boasts low crime rates, great schools, and excellent health care. Nearly 60% of locals over 25 have at least a bachelor's degree. The city expects to add 15,500 jobs by 2010, up 11.5% from 2006.

Bellevue's strategic location helps fire growth. GMI, whose revenue rose from $6 million in 2002 to $28 million last year, is based near its suppliers - Hitachi (HIT), Symantec (SYMC), Sun Microsystems (JAVA, Fortune 500) - as well as customers such as Boeing (BA, Fortune 500) and Starbucks (SBUX, Fortune 500).

"Many of our employees came from our clients," Overstreet says.

The city is also a font of tech talent, thanks to the Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) campus in nearby Redmond. Many former Microsofties have launched startups in Bellevue. Current employees pour wealth into a growing service sector.

Overstreet points out that many small businesses in Bellevue operate globally - not surprising considering that 40% of the population is nonwhite or foreign-born.

"We do have a glittering downtown now," he says, "but it's the diversity that attracts entrepreneurs like me."

I know Slidell i lived in Bay San Louis and Diamond Head and i think you should look for places near to you to start i now live around the corner from Bellevue WA and it is a beautiful place but with house prices around 400 thousand.I also know Mendocino and Marina del Rey and they are again very expensive to live.

This is what I consider to be the most important part of achieving your best life. START. It doesn't matter where you start…it matters that you start. It doesn't have to be a big thing. Just Start. Begin. Consider where your life is at this moment in reference to your goal, and if need be, start very small. Put $1 into an envelope each week as a savings plan. Clean out a closet. Delegate a job. If you can, take a much larger step, like putting $100 each week into a savings account. We all get too hung up on what we do, or how much we do. It doesn't matter WHAT you do….just DO! Move forward.

If income doesn't matter at all, and you want peace, and you're thinking of sticking to the US, I'd suggest Montana. I've looked at the aerial view photos of that state, and there are huge expanses of very-low populations. The key to peace is solitude in my book, so I choose the great state of Montana for that. For money, I'd choose somewhere else though.

I have two small children aged 3 and 5 and when we come home in the evening I can let them outside to play unsupervised and know they'll be safe.
