I would choose a Macbook. Reasons: The features fit me. It's power and performance is far better than windows. It is much better equiped and equipable for editing music and video. Although games are limited and certain features are limited, it meets my needs much better.

The best part of it is it is available for under 1000$ and if you can compromise for manufacturer's refurbished the you can go to www.ubid.com and bid there for this one and you may be lucky to get it there for around 700-750 $ with one year warranty.

( I bought it last month for 750$ and I am very much happy with this lappy...Nothing like this for this amazing price.)

For something a little cheaper I suggest the INSPIRONTM 1525

Hi-Def Options: Dell Media DirectTM , External Media Buttons, and Webcam
I suggest purchasing this from the dell store or Best Buy and get the two year warenty if you purchase it form Best Buy because if you have any trouble with the computer they fix it for free and if they have to send it back to the manu. 3 times you get a new computer!

Also if you cannot make up your mind visite the Dell website and they have a feature on there where the site can help you deside on a model.

Several of my friends have computers from this place and other than self inflicted problems they have had no problems.

As for what not to get. Unless you are used to the Mac OS then stay far away from Macs. I am a veteran computer user and no other operating system is more confusing or infuriating than Mac is. Every time I have to use a Mac I end up wanting to beat it with a sledgehammer. Also if you value your bank account stay away from Macs. You will pay absurd amounts of money for simple inexpensive upgrades. For example. It will cost you $100 more to upgrade your RAM from 1GB to 2GB on a regular Mac laptop when 4GB of laptop RAM only costs about $80. Oh and that Mac Air
cgonzalezriy (Carlos Gonzalez) mentioned doesn't even have a CD drive in it. And sure three Mac Airs may weigh as much as one regular laptop but three regular laptops cost as much as one Mac Air.

Also you may want to say away from anything from the big manufacturers because all of their computers come with Windows Vista whether you like it or not and Vista is a heap of fail and suck. It's also stupid and confusing. It asks you if you are absolutely sure you want to run such dangerous programs as the calculator. I kid you not it will. The only major company that I can even think of that sells computers without Vista is Dell and only on their Vostro line of laptops.

So in conclusion...
If you only need basic computing power up to mid range gaming go with a Dell Vostro which start at $400. If you need a midrange gaming laptop all the way up to a high end machine go to www.ibuypower.com. Their laptops start at $999. And if you just have absurd amounts of money to spend on a computer go to www.falcon-nw.com.

Things to stay away from. Mac & Windows Vista.Also if you can hold off on this for a year USB 3.0 will be out and while most people won't need the 10x increase in speed over USB 2.0 for all I know you might.

Well in revising my answer to fit what was actually asked I would buy (if money was no object) a Fragbook DRX from www.falcon-nw.com with...the Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800, 4GB DDR 800, 2 nVidia 8800M GTXs, 3 200GB 7200RPM HDDs, Blu-Ray Reader/Writer and DL DVD/RW, TV Tuner, a 1920x1200 display which is a higher resolution than 1080p, a $10 mouse, and Windows XP 32bit though I would upgrade it to Win XP 64bit because I have a disk lying around here somewhere. Oh and I would get a crazy custom paint job on the laptop.
