There are two types of love. Most people think of the first type as being the only type because the second type requires effort. It is not easy to figure out the second type of love is so very different from the first type, so it usually takes an outsider's explanation, or some sort of education for enlightenment.

The first type of love is the "falling in love" feeling. This is an experience that is natural in human beings. This is the love that is described as blind, all encompassing, and keeps a person thinking of the other day and night with no effort. Several things can prompt it, but it can happen at any time with anybody. This type of love can't be intentionally initiated or stopped. Humans have no control over this. When you have "fallen in love" it matters not that your close friends point out faults of the one you love because your own body makes excuses for the loved one. It is thought by many experts that this type of love was developed in humans for reasons of procreation. This drives any human towards the act of procreation by disallowing any serious faults of the other human to be distracting.

The good news and the bad news is that this form of love is always temporary. Sometimes it is over quickly, but it can last up to 2 or 3 years. During this time, it seems nothing either party does can change it. It also seems like it will never end, but it will. It has to. The body can't stand it longer. At some point, for reasons of survival, your body WILL fall back out of this type of love.

It is during this type of love experience that the vast majority of marriages take place in societies that don't generally arrange marriages. Don't forget, this type of love is inherent to being a human animal. I have not heard any of the experts use this terminology, but I personally think this type of love is the way we humans describe the animal instincts that drive procreation.

At this point, the reader may assume that I am confusing "in love" for lust. I am not. Lust is strictly limted to things sexual. Falling in love encompasses much much more than this.

The second type of love requires effort and is distinctly human. One must strive to have it. The good news is that as one communcates this love to others, they will likely return it in kind. This kind of love is based on the desire to make the other person's life better. When one is interested in helping another regardless of affecting self, this is love. When two people share this desire to make the other happy, it is sharing love. This type of love is everlasting as long as it continues to be with the intent of making the other happier or more comfortable.

The key to obtaining (and retaining) this type of love is simply communication. Dr. Gary Chapman, in his books, The Five Love Languages, describes what he has defined as five separate and disinct languages of love. He describes that each of us has a primary love language. If a person communicates with us favorably in this language, our emotional "tank" will be filled allowing us to be happy in this and other aspects of our lives. If you effictively communicate with your loved one in their primary love language, they will feel loved.

This love language is a necessary component of a happy long term relationship. As long as you keep your partner's tank filled using their primary love language, they will always feel loved and will almost certainly and maybe even unintentionaly share their love back with you.

I won't go into detail of the five love languages here. I will leave that to Dr. Chapman and others, but if I can introduce the reader to the concept in such a way as to cause them to check into this further, it will enhance their lives (and marriages) if they choose to follow the very simple guidelines for speaking the primary love languages of others.

It doesn't matter how many times we speak any of the love languages to another, if we fail to communicate with our loved one in their own primary love language, they will never get the message that we love them. Their tank will remain empty. Certainly a person can have a secondary or tertiary love language or even desire input via all five, but input from all but the primary love language will never fill their tank. "Words of Affirmation", "Gifts", "Acts of Service", and/or "Physical Touch" will mean little to a person who requires "Quality Time" to feel loved. Quotes were used since these are the exact names for the five love languages described by Dr. Chapman in his books.

"Five Love Languages" is only one way of helping describe the differences between the two types of love. The differences exist whether or not one accepts them. One love is only temporary. The other, more lasting love is or can be forever. Both are VERY strong and can bring much pleasure.


So, now to answer the question: Can you be in love with somebody you don't know very well?

In both types of love, the answer is yes.

One can certainly "fall in love" with a stranger if certain chemical reactions take place in the brain and body. Of course this can last longer if it is reciprocated by the other. This type of love happens. One cannot control it, start it or stop it at will. This love will be -- can only be -- temporary. Two years or so may seem like forever to some, particularly teenagers, but it isn't. This love will eventually vanish suddenly or over a period of time but it will go away.

The other type of love which requires communicating your love to the person in such a way as they receive it as love would be harder with a person who you don't know very well, but not necessarily impossible. Learning more about the person could certainly make your efforts more successful.

I think of being in love as either of two states. The first is the fallen in love state which can certainly happen with a stranger. The second is that long term love previously mentioned. One could still want, selflessly, to make the other person, whom they don't know very well, happier or more comfortable. Christians refer to this in their "love thy neighbor" messages and many others. This is a good thing and is certainly possible as I live it every day.


After all that, I reread the question to make certain I had answered it as you asked it. I don't believe I did. I now see the emphasis on the word YOU. Can YOU be in love with someone you don't know very well is a different question than the one I "heard" first. What I "heard" was, Can one be in love with someone one doesn't know very well. The question, as asked is personal and refers to me.

The answer is still yes. The reasons are above, but since these concepts are already embedded in my heart, ingrained, if you will, the answer, "Certainly!!!", is more accurate.
