555 timer IC not turning off motor
Asked by: maestro from SAN FRANCISCO, CA
I'm creating a circuit with a 555 timer IC (outputs 200mmA), 470 micro-Farad capacitor and 100k ohm resistor. According to calculations, the circuit will turn off approximately 52 seconds after being turned on. When attached to an LED, this holds true. However, when attached to a motor that requires around 250mmA, the motor does not shut off. Why is this?

An electric motor is an inductive load. When the voltage to it is disconnected, the magnetic field collapses back into the windings, creating a large negative voltage pulse. This negative voltage pulse may somehow be getting back to pin 2, the trigger. As you know, the timing cycle is triggered by a negative going voltage. This may be restarting the timing cycle, meaning the motor never turns off.
Try adding a 'free-wheeling diode' to the 555 output (look up the phrase o...
