What is that hard thing at the end of a shoelace called?

I know the answer to this one. Compliments will be to the first correct answer and any other interesting answer. Best Answer goes to the most thorough or best explained answer of the history of this item. I know the one word answer. I do not know the history other than the etymology of the word itself.
There is no "runner up" best answer here on Askpedia but it seems there should be. This is one question that just begs for an invented history. Lets just say, if you fool me, you may still wind up with the Best Answer reward. Just, please, if it is invented, please let the last words indicate this. If I believe througout the reading and am surprised to find it is fiction, there will be no points off for making it up.
This should make for some interesting reading. I look forward to it.

I just discovered I can't provide the thumbs up I promised since I am so new to Askpedia. I will ask and answer questions all day to try to get that elusive half star that will allow me to do so before it is too late. I am adding a new category to the answers that get a thumbs up. If you make me laugh, even with a wrong answer, you get one, too. Tcard, you are in that group. Thank you.
Of course anybody reading this can add their own thumbs up to the answers if they make you laugh.
