Asteroid 2005 WF
Asked by: droducla from SANTA MARIA, CA
On the NASA Near Earth Object Program website ( http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/neo/), it is indicated that recently asteroid 2005 WF came within 0.0409 AU of Earth. Based on its albeod, the object has an estimated diameter of between 47 and 100 meters. Its velocity relative to Earth was measured at 13.0 km/sec. Its composition is unknown.

a) If it had hit, what is the maximum amount of energy that it would have deposited on the Earth (worst case scenario)? [hint: to get your answer in Joules, convert all units to MKS: meters, kilogram, second, and use the formula for kinetic energy.]

b) Given that 1 ton of TNT has the equivalent energy of 4.184 GJ (gigajoules), how much energy would be released in the impact expressed as tons of TNT?

c) The largest nuclear weapon ever tested released about 60 megatons TNT. Briefly comment about hte relative damage asteroid WF might do if it does impact Earth.

The impact of extraterrestrial matter onto Earth is a continuous process. On average, some 50,000 tons of dust are delivered to our planet every year. While objects smaller than about 30 m mainly disintegrate in the Earth’s atmosphere, larger ones can penetrate through it and cause damage on the ground. When an object of hundreds of meters in diameter impacts an ocean, a tsunami is created that can devastate coastal cities. Further, if a km-sized object hit the Earth it would cause a global catastrophe due to the tran...
