chevy 350 reliability and price
Asked by: diablovox from FARGO, ND
Additional Details added (03/09/08):
I have a 1991 chevy caprice with a 305 in it. The engine went bust at 210,000 miles and my mechanic told me he can put a 350 with 100,000 miles from a salvage yard for $1600 with a 2 month warranty OR he says a new one would cost about $3500 total.. should i go for the deal or try to buy a new one from bay myself a tell him to put it in? I'm really confused..
Additional Details added (03/09/08):
Should i go for the mechanic's deal or try to buy a new one from Ebay and tell him to install it?
Additional Details added (03/09/08):
I was thinking of buying a rebuilt one from ebay.. they have pretty good warranties ( 1 year or more ).. is that a bad idea?
Additional Details added (03/09/08):
oh and how much do you think the rebuilt of my engine should cost?

Personally,

I would not do either the salvage or Ebay engine! A two month warranty is just that "two months". You don't know how the last person handled maintaince too and after your two months are over if this one busts then you’re out $1,600. I feel a salvage yard is only good to single parts like starters, alternators, ect.

They've been used in many GM vehicles for over 50 years now...that should tell you about reliability. You have MANY options. For one, I would advise to NOT buy something of that nature off of eBay. If/When something goes wrong, what's it going to cost you in labor, downtime, shipping, etc to handle warranty issues? It's things like this that you have to factor...

If it was myself I would go with "Thunderbolt" for a rebuilt engine, they have been around for years. Give them a call and see how far the nearest store/shop is from you. The shipping charges are going to be very high because of the size and weight of the engine. Get prices down to the penny in writting including things like core charge (if any), shipping, taxes and any thing else. If they have a store near you ask them out the door price and all details. If it has to be shipped get price which could include b...
