If you have a cold or flu you should probably be taking something for it, and many cold/flu medications cause drowsiness (usually due to antihistamine in the medication). I had the flu last week and Nyquil knocked me out every night. If you don't feel like using medicine to put you to sleep, try being more active during the day; you'll probably feel pretty tired at night.

Nyquil works great for me. But if your really really congested a prescription decongestant might be the only thing that may possibly help you get to R.E.M. Call your doctor and ask over the phone, they will answer your question and its free. Saving you time and money. I hope you feel better!...

This is said with absolutely no disrespect to any of the other answers, but I would be Leary of medications suggested by strangers. Everyone is different and their systems respond so. Do you have any pre-existing medical conditions (high blood pressure for example - some cold medicines do not react well with this pathology). Find out first.

I always add a pillow or two to raise my head; it help alleviate the press...

For bad colds (I never had the flu) I prefer drinking one strong whiskey sour. It helps me to relax and sleep comes easy after drinking it. The only medication I take is asprin.
