1. Tom sells a box of cameras to Tarryn, the agreement being that Tarryn will pay
Tom the agreed price a week later. Tom hands over the box of cameras, but when
he tries to claim the price a week later, Tarryn refuses to pay because the
cameras are stolen property and the contract is therefore illegal. Tom claims that
he did not know that the cameras were stolen property.
Can Tom legally compel Tarryn to pay the purchase price?

Not if the cameras were stolen. However, damages could possibly come front the guy that stole the cameras if and when he was caught.

Rexeipt of stolen goods is a crime whether knowingly or otherwise. Tom will have no legal grounds for any payment. The authorities will confiscate the stolen merchandise and return it to it's owner and Tom will have to explain how he gained possession of the stolen goods. It would be wise to not get the authorities involved if I were Tom.

He cannot force payment on stolen property...Ignorance of the law and of stolen property is no excuse....The next thing is did Tarryn turn the cameras over to the police? How else did he find out they were stolen? Tom needs to make sure the cameras were turned over to the police and that he did not know they were stolen...He needs to tell police where he got them....Everyone loses here....Did Tom pay someone for these cameras?...He can sue to get his money back on that deal....But more than likely he won't get it back.....
