Witness to a crime
Asked by: mrsgsm from -
If you have an underage (17) child that could possibly be a witness to a crime and the detectives want you to bring them in to speak with them,
should you have a lawyer present (the child is not accused per the detective). No experience with anything like this so we do not know our rights. Thanks.

You don't say which country you are in but on the whole I would say that the presence of a lawyer is unnecessary.

If it worries you that much, arrange to meet on neutral ground. Additionally, you can always ask ahead of time what the detective would like to question your child about. While not necessary, the presence of a lawyer wouldn't hurt anything except your pocketbook.
