astigmatisim
Asked by: lray

I recently went in for my 4 year olds check-up. The doctor that was there that day said my daughter had a astigmatisim in one eye. She said to follow up with a pediatric opthamologist. I wear glasses and it will be a life long thing. I am not for sure its something to worrie about right now because she is to young. I thought about consulting my regular pediatrician who wasn't there that day but I feel that people sometimes get put in glasses when it may not get worse. I dont know what to do. Any suggestions would help.

The person to consult is an ophthalmologist. If you can find a pediatric ophthalmologist, so much the better. It would be a little dangerous to follow the directions of other health care professionals. They will not have kept up with the best treatment for this specialized condition. There is little worry if you follow this direction. It is a legitimate worry if you don't.

there is a good exercise for the eyes, maybe you can try to get your daughter to do it as a game - since she is young...fill a clear glass with water and focus your vision on the surface of the water, than on the bottom of the glass, and repeat for a few minutes a couple times a day. this exercise helped my dad improve his vision and reduce his glasses #. it may prevent the future need for glasses.

As one who has astigmatism in both eyes let me recommend glasses as not treating can lead to greater problems in visual perception. Much of what we "see" is a result of brain processing and not what is actually there, but the fist information from the eyes has to be accurate and internally consistent. An astigmatism confuses the image and its' information. Later she may want to have a laser correction done to the defective cornea, but this is not recommended until adulthood. For now glasses are the best choice...

i've had astigmatism for about 7 years now and at first the doctor told me i'd never be able to wear contact lens unless i had custom ones made. after spending money on custom ones, a few years later i discovered that many contact companies have now mad contacts for people with astigmatism. it's actually a pretty common thing and i know a lot of other people with it. the question is, is it mild astigmatism? because if it is, nothing to worry about. all it means is that the cornea isn't perfectly round, causing blurry vi...

I have an astigmatism, and have needed glasses since I was young.
I never wore my glasses unless I needed to see the board at school, and went through life until 8th grade when I got contacts not seeing anything (I can not see arm's length in front of my face) Do something now, or they could go through a lot of their life not seeing anything and straining their eyes making their vision worse.
