Clean the Junk Out of Your Computer - How to And Make it Run Faster and Smoother!
The first step to clean the junk out out your computer is to look over your desktop and decide which icons need to go. It'll probably be easier to decide what you want to keep first, then go from there. For example, I love playing Scrabble®, and I play it often. That's why I keep the icon shortcut on my desktop, so I can easily find it.
Now, if I'm looking at a sea of icons and I want to keep Scrabble®, but I can't find it, all I have to do is move the cursor to a vacant spot on the desktop and left click. Then, I press the first letter of the program's name- "S" in this case- and the computer will help me find the program by highlighting programs that begin with "S". If the first program isn't the one you want, then left click and hit the letter again. Repeat the process until you find the program you want. Then, move that icon over to the far left side of the desktop. Continue on until you have a few rows (at the most) of the icons you want to keep lined up together. The rest of the icons you'll need to delete to help clean the junk out of your computer.
Delete the Unwanted Icons and Associated Programs
Unwanted icons can easily be deleted by removing the programs that are associated with them. If you simply place unwanted icons in the Recycle Bin, you'll only be getting rid part of each program. The best way to remove all the files a program contains, is to click on "Start" and go into your list of "All Programs." Find the specific program you want, then look for its "Uninstall" file. Click on that and follow the instructions to dump the program.
You can also go to the Control Panel of your computer and click on "Add or Remove Programs". Follow the instructions to completely delete the program and all of its associated files.
A Word of Warning Here: Sometimes when you clean the junk out of your computer, and you uninstall a program, a message will pop up on the screen. The message will tell you the file you're attempting to remove is shared by another program. It will then ask if you want to delete the file. Trust me, I speak from experience, don't delete it! A long time ago, I made this mistake, then I wondered why some of my other programs wouldn't run. Duh...
Finally, once you're done with the above steps, clean the junk out of your computer by emptying out your recycle bin to finish the job.
