That portion of Gulliani's speech was to help set up the new direction the McCain campaign was heading following the convention. Obama's message of "change" was killing them and winning a lot of support among undecideds. By having Gulliani stand up there spewing the same "Grand ole Party" lines he energizes the base, while at the same time, McCain can win over some undecideds by stealing this idea of change and distancing himself from President Bush. Every McCain/Palin add since the convention has encompassed this "Change" theme. It was a very intelligent political tactic that helps rid McCain of the image that he is a GOP lackie and still allow him to hold the support of his base.

And it appears to be working, damnit.

The entire purpose of the last two weeks of the McCain campaign was to refocus the debate. Up until the conventions, it was framed as a change agent against an experienced leader. But thats just a jab for people who have seen some of the stuff he's written in the past.

Sarah Palin was an attachment for this. Her proven record of reform...note the word choice of reform and not change...set off the wave of this sentiment. While she may have been for the bridge of no where, she was the prevailing force to stop its acceptance. While she may have asked for earmarks in her life, she was the prevailing force to reduce earmarks by huge amounts in Alaska, the state to receive the most per capita in the nation in the last 50 years. She put the jet up on ebay, put the check book up on the internet...all a personal narrative McCain can exploit for his reform platform that he can sell to both his conservative base, and the Walmart moms while he solidifies his base which is squarely with independents.

As to whether change can truly be enacted, I actually believe only John McCain has been the one to show that can occur. I dont' believe I'll happen if either get elected, but Barack's positions wont be enacted even if Pelosi gains seats. Barack's ideas on the environment is radical (as seen as drilling) and wont be passed. His healthcare plan enjoys less support in congress than President Bush enjoys in the public. His tax plan will bankrupt the federal government (who takes a majority of its taxes from corporate entities, then from the stock market...not from "the lower middle class" as Barack would have you believe) and he would spend more into the budget which does not exist. I see him advocating change, yet he doesn't accept public financing. He hates lobbyists, yet the program designed to stop their influence on campaigns (public financing), he PROMISED (emphasis added) he'd enroll in, he lied and opted out of. The 527's he says he hates so much have raised double the amount on the left than on the right.

So the question posed back is what do you expect? Small reforms over time as democracy demands at the will of the majority? Or change that you do not know from a man who cannot institute it?

I was not impressed with Gilliani's speech at all.
