Internet Frauding - How can I get my money back?
Asked by: Sara103 from -
I fell into the trap of an internet frauding company - I purchased a cat, prepaid, only to find out a few days later (through "googling") that the whole company and their promises is fraud.
Money is gone already - any chance to get it back? Would it make sense to employ a lawyer?

You'd be wasting your money! These scams are so common! These sites pop up, take your money, then disappear! They change their web pages and do it all over again! Don't buy anything on the net unless you check it out thoroughly first! It's too late after the fact! A lesson well-learned is what you got from this transaction, and that's it! Sorry!

Depending on how you paid, you may be able to recover some or all of the money. Obviously, certain forms of payment like cash and money orders are next to impossible to recover. On the other hand, if you paid with a credit card or used a third party service like PayPal, you may have some options available to you. A lawyer could help but you have to consider the fact that the lawyer may cost more than the amount of money you lost.

Lawyers are very expensive and would likely want at least $3,000 to "open a file" on a case like this. Your best bet is to try law enforcement. Contact your local District Attorney's office or even your local Police force. They will have suggestions as they are dealing with a lot of computer crime.

How did you pay? Call your bank and report the fraud. Your bank will investigate (for no cost to you), and if it's found out that you were de-frauded, your bank will refund your money (in most cases).

If you paid "cash" - wire or transfer funds, you will not likely recover a dime.
