On a book shelf the first page of the first volume is on the "inside¨
so the bookworm eats only through the cover of the first volume, then 8 times
1000 pages of Volumes 2 - 9, then through the cover to the 1st page of Vol 10.
He eats 8,000 pages.

Ok that is a trick question, because I'm not sure if you mean 1000 physical pages, or by 1000 by number. Assuming it is 1000 by number, that means 500 actual pages per volume. So if there are 10 volumes that would be 5000 pages he eats through.
