how important is the mare in breeding horses?

in selecting a mare to base a breeding program on, how important is she in the breeding equation?

I would say she is as important as the male horse (forgot what they are called) due to the fact that both will contribute to the offspring equally!

She is the mother, for God's sake. The male is called the stud or stallion. It takes two to produce and offspring and I refer you to your parents for a more elaborate explanation.

well a Mare is the name for a female horse when she is of breading age, the male counterpart of that being a stallion
