do you think kitty litter would work the same way in the soil as "water saving crystals" do ?

I believe it would do the opposite. The litter absorbs the moisture (urine) and then forms a hard clump. I wouldn't think the soil could extract moisture from it like the crystals you mentioned. The crystals work the opposite; When they absorb the water, they become soft and gelatinous. I'd think the best (and fun) way to find out would be a little side-by-side test. Perhaps two separate pots with the same type/size plant and try the crystals in one and litter in the other. I'd keep them together in the same area or win...
