renting a private property
Asked by: bigt23 from -
I have just rented a property privately and no matter how hard I try for some reason the landlord wont give me the copy of the agreement but he still expects his money at the end of every month the paper work all looked above board, myself and my partner had to sign it and it was on headed paper from a local law firm. what are my rights if he is not meant to rent this property out, and because my partner is 8 months pregnant could he just throw us out because we have no copy of the agreement. he also wants me to put the money straight into his private account by no other means but CASH and he made this very clear, so to me he does not want a paper trail. could I get something drawn up for him to sign that will cover any nasty avents?

He is probably not reporting your rental payments as income. Just save the deposit slips and that will serve as proof of payment for your rent. THIS IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY. NO ATTORNEY-CLIENT RELATIONSHIP EXISTS. CONSULT A LAWYER IN YOUR STATE FOR LEGAL ADVICE
Since you didn't indicate what state or country you reside in, here's a rental agreement in Canada. For the most part, rental agreements between tenant and landlord have similarties to other states and countries. Some "lanagues" in these rental agreements may various a little state by state.

You have a bad landlord and I would get to work finding another place. Then, stiff the guy for at least one month given his failure to give you the agreement. He will not be able to sue you because the contract is not on paper. He is required to give you a copy of the signed contract for your protection, which is why he is not doing it. He is up to no good and you'd better get away from him.
