can you get fleas in your house if you do not have a pet

My daughter has animals in her home and I found a flea in mine after her children visited

Fleas can easily hitch a ride on anything, people (and children) included. Since they have pets they carried them in on their clothing or their bodies, then the fleas decided to hang around in your house. If they laid eggs in your carpet then the problem continues until you resolve it with flea treatment.

Go to the a local vet and buy a can of flea spray.
