As the head of government, head of state, commander-in-chief, and chief diplomat of the world's sole superpower (some are emerging too...) the President has a lot of influence all over the world. Regarding the situation in Georgia, the United States has made it clear that Russia should stop immediately. I do not think that the United States will take military action, but will rather take tough diplomatic action so that the problem will be resolved peacefully. That is just a guess. Who knows what will happen...

Everyone is more powerful than Bush! I rest my case!

Putin is not more powerful than Bush even though some military options have been taken off the table by anti-war sentiments. As a chess player you learn that the threat is more powerful than its execution and Bush has several cards to play. There is removal from the G8, WTO sanctions and some possibilities with NATO. I think this is what has caused the current slowdown in the advance of Russia. The UN is totally useless. Most of Europe seems to be useless and they had better wake up or they will find themselves helpless...

I admire the French president's actions even though he got sucked in by agreeing to some action by Russia. This is why Russia is still in Gori. Putin is not untouchable and he is finding out that there are some penalties to pay for aggression. Bush is making the right moves to save the government of Georgia, but I don't know about all the territories.

The defensive missle deal with Poland is an example. As long as the US goes about strengthening our alliances in a methodical, workman-like way we will keep Russia contained and under control. Our next move should be to get the Ukraine into NATO. That will frost the Russians and make them nervous as all the grain they eat comes...
