Noise coming from telephone
Asked by: lgboyd from -
Occasionally and sporadically I get a short burst of noise coming from the telephone.

The phone is a corded desktop phone, not cordeless. It is NOT off-hook and there are no other extensions or phones in use.

The noise does not seem to be related to the use or any other electronics or applicances. It is usually a few seconds in length. It is a kind of screeching sound, like interference, or like the phone is starting to ring but does not.

No phone calls have been recently made and none are received. It is particularly distributing at night as it causes disruption of sleep.

I do not think it is the phone itself, as it has happened with 2 diffferent phones.

Any ideas on what is causing the noise? Any resolution?

It's probably the phone jack! Get that checked out by your telephone service provider.

it sounds like the phone line is not properly grounded. what you are hearing is voltage build up discharging through the phone. your phone line should as it comes in have a grounding block check to see if the wire connected or callthe phone co. to check it out.
