how can i tell which sites are safe/legal to download from. I imagine the free sites are probably illegal and risky.Ive looked at some sites and those which look OK usually require personal info which im reluctant to give.
UTUBE and LAST FM seem to have the material i want whereas ITUNES
seems much more (poppy) and complicated for my liking.

UTUBE and LASTFM are legal. And I agree with you about ITUNES. But it seems everyone else is using it. I don't give out personal information either. That just leads to spam at best and worse could happen. If they want personal information, I don't think they are all right.
If I am in doubt about a site, I Google reviews. If Site Adviser says it is all right, I trust them. If you don't have Site Adviser, get it. It is practically indispensable these days.
