In cases of infectious pharyngitis that are not viral, the cause is almost always a bacterium usually a group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus, which causes what is commonly called strep throat. Like viral pharyngitis, strep throat can spread quickly and easily within a community, especially during late winter and early spring. Unlike most forms of viral pharyngitis, however, untreated strep throat can lead to serious complications, such as glomerulonephritis (a kidney disorder) and rheumatic fever (a potentially life-threatening illness that can damage heart valves). A strep infection also has the potential to spread within the body, causing pockets of pus (abscesses) in the tonsils and in the soft tissue around the throat.

Janice, you are not alone! I had to go through 2 different antibtiotics in the past month alone (and 2 doctor visits) with the same thing. My daughter has been sick since June 21 and has gone to the doctor 4 times and gone through 3 different antibiotics for bronchitis. We are still trying to get better. This Summer has really hit the Detroit area hard with viruses and bacterial infections. And when you get sick in the Summer, it seems to take longer to get over infections like that. This Summer has really hit the Detroit area hard with viruses and bacterial infections. And when you get sick in the Summer, it seems to take longer to get over infections like that. Go to the doctor again and explain the situation and get on a stronger antibiotic. The zithromax didn't help me either and now I'm on Cipro (a stronger antibiotic). Good Luck!
