Well, for one thing, you can't do without the person you love. Love is not a burden. Love gives as well as receives.
Pity is more like tolerance. In a romantic light, pitying your partner does him/her no favors, as it can confuse friendship with love. Another question I might ask is, what are you getting from the relationship of someone you pity?...
