When entering a parking lot and intersection in the lot, from the street, does that car have to yield ?
My son was driving in a parking lot and was a little more than half way through the intersection when a car turned in from the street and darted in front of him (right to left) There was a yellow line that the guy drove through. My son hit him He (my son) just got the car so did not yet have insurance. Was the yellow line a yield sign? It seems like the other guy would have to yield since my son was more than half way through.
There are no tickets but the guy is going after my son to pay for the damage.
Additional Details added (07/21/08):
There was no traffic lights in the parking lot. As far as the yellow line goes, if you make a plus sign (the intersection) my son was driving in the middle of the intersection going north (upward) and the yellow line was where a stop sign line would be for the other guy, to the right of my son. I will get the address for the google satellite.

Most of the time the parking lot driver has to yield to the driver entering from the street, If the driver was crossing closed traffic lanes in the parking lot then he may have some or all of the liability. Take photos of the location of the accident and the damage to BOTH cars if you can.

Do you have the address of the parking lot and a general location of the entrance/exit? I would like to look at the accident location in Google Earth...

Thebestchoie withyour sonis to tell that he was not driving and get away paying any money for insurance if he wishes to.
Same had hapened to me in a parking lot and the lady who was driving did not have a driving licence. She called her husband and when I asked her to pay the damage to the car then she told to the cop that her husband was driving and she got away without paying me any damage. This is the real world if you wish to survive....

In my opinon based on your description of what happened, from my diagram, it appears that the other driver (STOP sign not a yellow line) should have seen your son driving into the parking lot (if no TRAFFIC LIGHTS in front of him).

"yellow line" (solid) driver shouldn't pass
"yellow line" (breaks in the line) driver can pass if its clear ...

I don't think you're going to like what you're about to read.... (and I'm sure I'm not going to get "the best answer award! " [read the "extended answer" area too] ...here goes).

There are two jurisdictions. First, "the parking lot" and second, "the street".
