sony trinitron sleep light blinks all the time. How can I turn it off?

My Sony sleep light blinks (blink, blink, blink....blink, blink, blink. I tried to turn it off with the remote to no avail. What am I missing?

Well, this really isn't an answer, but a solution would be to put a piece of electrical tape over the light. We had to put a gel over our digital clock, or the room would glow red all night.
