What are electric fan sensors?

Electric fan sensors are a temperature sensitive resistor that sends a signal to the PCM. This signal is then passed on by the PCM to decide the speed of the fan. PCM with the help of this signal decides at what speed the fan will run and when.

Electric cooling fan cannot work on it's own. It works efficiently with the help of different supporting parts. Some cooling fans are controlled with the help of engine computer while others work on the basis of a thermostatic switch. The electric fan with the help of the thermostatic switch automatically turns on when the temperature of the engine goes above a set point. Similarly it stops when the temperature goes back to normal. The thermostatic switch that is used by the electric fan is nothing but electric fan sensor. They are not actually switch but are temperature sensitive radiator.

How do they work?

Electric fan sensors are installed in the radiator fins to detect temperature changes in the radiator. Current flows through the closed contacts of the sensor to the electric fan motor, which spins to operate the fan. Now days all latest cars have been equipment with a special coolant temperature sensor."
