Beta catenin has been isolated as the protein which makes the human brain's cortex larger than in other species. This is the part of the brain responsible for intellectual abilities which make human beings unique.

There are thousands of proteins in the brain that are isolated regularly. As to new proteins..... my lab has recently isolated presenilin, and other members of the gamma secretase complex.
