Is there a reason why catholic churches have stain glass windows, and do they all have them?

Originally stained glass was used in churches and cathedrals, over a thousand years ago, so that the people inside the church could not see the world outside. Most older Catholic churches have them, as do other denominations. Now they are used for their beauty and craftsmanship!
