The temporary cure would be some mints. I prefer sugarfree gum. The long-term(I know from experience here) is brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Richard the retired dentist will get on later and give you some similar advice :)

Usually just brushing your teeth or chewing gum can keep breath "fresh".
There are some people that have bad breath and it is a medical condition, halitosis. This can be treated by their doctor.

Don't forget to brush your tongue! That pasty white film on your tongue can cause the halitosis too!

Brushing and flossing are the more obvious solutions, but if these fail, I recommend a visit to your dentist.
Tooth decay has a rather unpleasant odour, and holes arent always easily detected, in between teeth for example.
Another cause could be a gum disease such as halitosis or gingivitis.
Again, I recommend a visit to your dentist to rule these possibilities out....

Short of keeping your mouth closed all the time, there are a few things you can do:
1) Brush thoroughly, especially your tongue! Lots of stink on there. Floss daily and be sure to do it properly
2) Consider a tongue scraper. You can buy one, very inexpensively, at most...

Parsley. I'm serious. I grow parsley in a pot by the kitchen door, and I chew some after I've eaten garlic or something smelly like that the night before. For whatever reason, it completely clears up your breath! (It is also full of iron and an excellent tonic for the blood.)
Try it, you'll see what I mean. Let me know how you go.

First you have to determine the cause.
Sometimes it is caused by a medical condition. Diabetics, for instance, sometimes exhale ketone bodies that have a distinctive odor. Treatment here is control.
A local infection in the respiratory tract (nose throat, windpipe, lungs), chronic sinusitis, postnasal drip, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, gastrointestinal disturbance, liver or kidney ailment can also cause it.
