vcr volume control factory vcr 2001 olds silhouette

i have a 2001 olds silhouette with the factory vcr entertainment system. the volume only comes on when the car stereo is turned off as it uses the same factory speakers. is the volume control preset to one setting, or is there another way to adjust it.
