Is it OK to Alter Nature?
Asked by: kc5255 from PHILADELPHIA, PA
Human beings are equipped with rationality and the ability to make morally good and morally bad choices. Is it OK to alter nature, or should we leave well enough alone? Sometimes we hear the criticism, “human beings should not play God.” What does that mean? Is it true? Is it ok to use technology to get pregnant? How should we die? Do we have to simply allow nature to take its course? Is plastic surgery ok? Is it ok to use technology to enhance our bodies and our abilities? How should we treat the environment? Should scientists ever restrict their research, or the applications of their research, on ethical grounds?

I believe that nature alters itself enough; it certainly doesn't need our help in the process. Have you noticed that the sun sets a little to the northwest now and not due west? That's Mother Nature for you... always full of surprises!

So far altering nature is concerned, if this is done sustainable level then nature is with you like if you build a medium height dam to stop the flow of a river and then divert it for irrigation and power generation purposes. When you become too greedy to raise the height of dam then nature plays i...

When we think of the progress in medical science, and the lives that have been saved, we can't question the fact that altering nature for the common good is a positive thing. I don't think people play God when they choose to use their gifts to improve the quality of life. I personally think, if the technology exists to create life, as in invitro fertilization, then why not use it? Ask any couple who are desperate to have a child of their own! We should die when our quality of life has deteriorated to the point that deat...

Humans have already done so much damage to the earth, and we are just trying to make the bad things good again. We feel guilty about what we have done so we try to fix it by altering nature thinking that they are doing a good deed. It's not okay and people should think about what they are doing to our beloved planet.

What do you mean? Our every move is affecting nature. That time you saw that guy spit on the road change nature. We've built thousands of buildings affecting nature. We kill animals for food, put that in for nature :D

Change keeps coming. And change is nature. Saying that we should not alter nature is almost the exact same as saying we should not exist. Every breath you are taking has an effect on nature :P...

I think that God is in control of this world and no matter how bad things are or how good things are it all happens for a reason. And no matter how people think they may be playing God, really God is playing you. I'm not perfect and I have more than my share of bad things in my life but in the end even if I don't go to church all the time or read the Bible all the time I will put my life in God's hands, and if I go to hell then I'll know it's because God wanted me to. People worry to much about what they can't control, ...

Interesting question!

The human race has always interfered with nature.
We started altering nature from day one.
We killed animals for food, we chopped down trees for wood, we cleared land to plant crops and we learned how to make fire.
Tribes used dyes to paint their skin and they pierced their ears and noses...
