Thus they won't want you to do it, and instead go to something more secure or something they see as more beneficial.

Because it's out of the "norm" or the "ordinary". Personally, Normal is a setting on a washing machine. Be different, be creative, be out of the "Norm", because once you do it, people will then have a tendency to then say "i t old you so", or "i was going to try that". some people simply does not want to even have a trace of belief that what they had believed in all along might be wrong.

People want to maintain good relationship with you and maybe there's no reason for them to give you destructive criticisms because you really are a good person to them, and that they see no wrong in you.

Every one has their own mindset and vision and since they are close to you and love you that is why they feel that it's their right to advice you.

I do not find them as wrong. Always listen to every one and thank them for their great and kind words but do what your mind and heart says. Where there is a will there is a way. I am sure you have a will to achieve in one field and you will be extremely successful.

I am 47 and I wanted to do my MS in Engineering from Stanford Univ. when I completed my BE in 1983 but my daddy asked me to be in Nepal and work there with one of my cousin. I listened to him rather than my own heart and I found myself not fulfilling my dream This is what happens when you can not do what your heart and mind says.

I think they praise you initially to establish a medium for future talk where as 'you' feel confident in at least hearing them out because " they've given you some respect ", into which they think you'll be more receptive in following their advice rather than going it your way.
Or maybe they just think you should get a pat on the back once in a while to keep your spirits up.
